Just curious. Am I the only one that doesn't use chamois cream when out cycling. Those that fo use it do you swear by it?

Depends on the length of spin. For me, it its going to be more than four hours in the saddle, I find it makes things more comfortable.

    Can't go without it.

Also a failsafe training motivator. Once the chamois cream goes on there's no backing out :pac:

Used it once, found it just felt cold and manky, never again.

As someone who's had quite a few saddle sores, I always use chamois cream and a decent, well fitting pair of shorts.

    Friction is an enemy.

chamois cream would just ruin the bit of steak I'm tenderizing for my post ride meal

    Its a...er....slippery slope.

Next you'll stop shaving the legs, then the handlebars get higher. At which point there'll be hiking socks pulled up to the knees with flappy shorts.

Then, at this advanced stage of departure from the rules, you'll basically be in free-fall and may start running and swimming.

For cycles over 2 hours then yes, so of us have soft arses :P

I use it to take up some space in the bathroom press. I bought a tube in 2009 and I haven't finished it.

On the WW200 a few years ago, the weather was brutal. I was lucky in that I was able to change both shorts and jersey after 100k..by the time I got back to Greystones I had bad cuts on both butt cheeks. It was caused by the stitching around the edge of the padding in my shorts, cutting into the skin over a long period of time. It's the only time I've ever wished I'd used chamois cream!

I will be doing the WW200 again this year...if the forecast is for prolonged periods of rain on the day..ill be using as much chamois cream as I can!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,116 ✭✭✭bazermc

If using it, where exactly do you put it?

Were you wearing the Swords Nalini shorts? They were terrible for that.

Yep! .... I had a half-moon shape scar on each cheek for days after! .... I now wear Santini shorts for any long distance rides. The Nalinis are reserved for club league races.

Anywhere that comes in contact with the padding in your shorts.

Ugh, I'm all too familiar with the half-moon scar from those shorts. I binned them. Using them in the rain was a real killer.

The Imp-sport shorts did the same for me (the ones before the design change )

I have never used it and never even considered it,but most of my rides would be 2-3hrs except for Sportives .

For regular spins, no. For anything 3grs or over, yes, I use assos arse cream

Directly onto your skin, not onto the chamois....

    Don't use it.

I wear them regularly without much hassle but I agree that they are poor in comparison to most shorts - there's more padding in a J-Cloth. I managed to get through a wet Leige Bastogne Liege in them.

I tend to put it in the bathroom cabinet but away from the toothpaste and tampons; it can be a tad messy.
If travelling to the races, I keep it in a side pocket of my gear bag as it can put greasy streaks on clothing.
And of course, I also slather it liberally on the general seat-area, if you get what I mean.
Maybe I need to cut back a bit; I find most tubs are a quare bit more expensive than Vaseline these days

Aye, hour long commute EW so if I didn't use it the commute home would cause havoc in dried ex-sweaty gear.

I also use the Assos stuff, applying it where my body contacts the saddle. I didn't use it until my spins started lasting longer than 3-4 hours. I recently started using the Assos skin repair gel stuff, as my spins are lasting upwards of 5 hours; I've found it to be incredibly effective.

Since you're doing PR, ptr_84, I would highly recommend it.

I use the women's Chamois Buttr. To quote Evelyn Stevens "you want your taco to be happy not angry".

Use it for longer spins or multi-day rides.

Sudocreme for long (300+) audax rides, nothing otherwise...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,793 ✭✭✭Red Kev

Sudocreme all the way here as well.

Have a 40 minute commute in jeans where I don't bother, but any other cycle over 60 mins I spread a bit of it on the skin before putting shorts on.

On long touring holidays it's a god send. Some days in cycling shorts, others in ordinary shorts, usually put some on starting off at 7.00 am and some more at lunch. I tend to cycle till 7.00 pm, with plenty of arsing around in between so might not cycle very far in a day. It's also handy for a load of other things like burns and bites and doesn't really stain the clothing.

I use it for weekend rides.

I also use it when I know I am going to be walking long distance in hot/humid weather, it is even more valuable then than during a cycle. Lycra getting damp is not going to chafe/burn as much as damp boxers do. If I walk in hot/humid weather for a few hours the next day I walk like John Wayne. Tube always goes with my on holidays to hot countries now. I spent a day sightseeing in Rome in August a few years ago, 38 degrees, did have chamois cream, next day was really glad I had.

Use Body Glide. It's dry and non-staining and it works a treat.

Which cream do you use exactly? I always have the same problem walking in summer.

Whichever one is in a shop when i run out. I had "Chamois Buttr" and now the one at home says "the choice of the discerning cyclist" on the tube. Any will do the job.
