Hi Just wondering if anyone has undergone 'root planing' or 'deep cleaning'. I have had it done recently and since my last appointment I've had severe toothache and think a tooth that has been previously filled has died. The dentist never mentioned that this may happen - has anyone had any similar experience??? I'm to return to the dentist this week.

Elain111, I had this done last year, with very good results. I decided to refer myself to a periodontist last summer, as I felt I was developing gum issues, receding, bleeding etc. I had two sessions two weeks apart. You might just be experiencing some increased sensitivity, as they go very deep to clean and smooth surface of the tooth roots. An xray would show up a problem before the deep clean? My Perio insisted on me having x-ray before the job itself. Maybe you could request one? Maybe a root canal treatment would save the tooth, if there is a problem. I would go back! If you want number of my perio, please feel free to pm me. I was very happy with everything, but it was very pricey yet worth it. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. Thats great you had good success in the end. I returned to my dentist he said i have a very rare bacterial infection in my gums. It is commonly known as 'trenchmouth' soldiers in the world wars got it due to poor hygiene. It only flared up for me since i started the root planing but he had no explanation for it as i'm a non smoker. Can occur in smokers but in 36 years he never had a non smoker getting it. I'm on antibiotics for 5 days so hope that clears it.
