I'm a plug chucking philistine that's decided to give fly fishing a go so I'm a total beginner. I'm going to get started on a local lake that's stocked with rainbows.
I'm wondering do you get more takes at certain times of the day than others?

This time of year between 12 and 3 in the afternoon is the sweet spot as it's when the sun is highest, water is warmest and insect hatches are most prolific.

This is relevant for both rivers and lakes.

Try to see what's coming off the water and match your fly to the size and shape of the natural.

Buzzer fishing can be especially deadly for rainbows this time of year with the early season hatches of small black midge.

I like a different approach , very fast sinking line with snake flies or big lures twitched across the bottom

Never let's me down regardless of time of year
