Happens ever so oftenand a back pedal solves it. I read on the web that it may be due to chai length but all the guides I uses suggest I have that correct. Any how I decided to shorten the chain(Imo sill correct) but the problem got worst. It out it the bottom J wheel always in small front large back, ( 53/39, 11/28 ) it a new short cage 105 rd so I can't figure it out. The hanger seems to look true and straight bit the RD look out as I sight the chain down along. If I push it into what I think would be correct for the chain on to ride off the chain pops off between the wheel and cassette.

I'll try fews pics up later.

    Any ideas?

    Breanach78.

Stiff chain link or a chain pin was pushed in too far or not far enough. Put the bike in a work stand and turn the pedals very slowly. It should catch at the same point each time.

Thanks. Tho of that but no. Was sure it may be associated was chain lenight so decided to shorten it. Seems to be worst now. Now when changed to small front large back and I back pedal it down shifts two. Sure is alignment but can't figure it out.

Maybe the jockey wheel is worn.

Have you checked the chain itself isnt heavily worn/stretched?

Was the previous one a short cage RD?

It takes a lot of chain to go around a 53/28. I didn't think a short cage would suffice but I'm open to correction.

Well it shifts into all gears but that said the problem seems to have got worst since I shortened the chain. I only done so as I think there was to much slack in it in the first place. Now I am thinking its to short as when I back sip it changes down.

    Ps ya was short rd.

Problem was there at current length took out two and still there. Added three and still there. I'll have to bring to some one who knows more. It looks slightly out of line but I can't see why. I'll have to bring to a lbs. I'll update here
When Sorted so as to try help others.

Did you remove the jockey wheels prior to your problem? The tension roller (lower jockey) is directional. There's an arrow on the roller that indicates the correct direction. If it's installed the wrong way round it will cause the problem you describe. This happened to me when I removed the rollers to clean and grease them.

No, I bought new. But that said the shop mentioned about swapping out jockey wheels form Another new one as that's all I needed. Plus the lower wheel look worn. But I put that down to the chian riding off the wheel unknown to me.

Check that the directional arrow on the roller is in the right direction.

Jockey wheel rolling in Correct direction. I can't figure it out. It pops off in the 53 to 28 and down 4 gears on the stand. It happens sometimes in the mid gears too. I know I should not be in the extremities like 53/28 but sometimes you use it. Even so one should be OK to use when caught out. Any way I have noted that the lower J wheel it ridding not in the centre if the chain but mostly on the inside side of the chain. I am told by a friend the only thing left to do is get the hanger checked with a jig, so off to the bike shop! I'll up date here with results when done.

If the chain drops between the cassette and the spokes then the limit screw could be set wrong (separate to the main problem you are describing, most likely), and/or the hanger is bent, and/or the derailleur itself is damaged (worn, twisted, bent,...), etc.

I'd check the limit screws anyway, but the rear hanger sounds a good place to focus initially.

And if the rear derailleur is a 5800 or 5701 model then it has sufficient capacity for a 53/39 up front and a 11/28 at the back. 53-28 is a horrible cross-chain combination though, personally I'd avoid it like the plague.

I can now see why, my other bikes are on same, 53/28 but 10sp with no issues.

Any way I brought it to a bike shop with a hanger jig and I was 15mm out over the length of the jig. Sorted now and after one ride it running well. It was on ten speed and was not dropped or knocked since so the tolerance mustn't have been enough for the slightly wider 11sp setup.

Any way thanks for the replies and the help, hope this may be here to help someone else.
