I'm leaning towards the crossfire primarily because of the price approx €300 in halfords and the bike will be used for commuting in and out of work about 10km round trip.

Before I pull the trigger, does anyone have any suggestions on either bike. My previous bike was about 18 years old before it got stolen recently.

Both bikes are nice. Giamt have, perhaps, a bigger name. Halfords can be a bit hit and miss with regards to bike set up - they are getting better though.
For a short commute like that either will be fine.

I had a look at some of the second hand bikes but can't be sure what type of condition they're in

This Giant Rapid looks good http://www.adverts.ie/hybrid-bikes/giant-rapid/9566753
