Recording Saorview programme via USB with HDMI conflict?

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum - I've had a look around the Boards site and can't find anywhere else more appropriate.

We have just purchased a Philips TV from Argos (43PUT4900/12). It allows the recording of a Saorview programme via USB and an attached hard drive, which works well in itself. However, while the recording is taking place, it does not allow access to any other source, including a Humax Foxsat satellite box connected via HDMI. In effect, this means that the TV is useless for the duration of the recording. When I attempt to access the Source option, I am advised to stop recording first!

I have searched the Philips site and found there are some similar issues reported re HDMI conflicts for this TV and a software update has been promised sometime in the future. I rang the Philips support line and the CS person has put in a query to the technical section to see if my problem will be included in any future update. He did not sound hopeful.

My question here is if it's reasonable to expect access to HDMI ports while USB recording on a TV? I know that it only has a single tuner and that I cannot watch another terrestrial station, but I really though that we could have used a HDMI device at the same time as recording. I am wondering whether I should return it to Argos? Otherwise, the TV is great and I suppose the conflict won't happen too often, but it's annoying. Any advice/comments welcome.

In my experience this is quite common. Basically the Tv is just too busy doing the recording to cope with anything else. If you really want Saorview recording I would consider a separate Saorview box. Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear :(

Thanks for your reply. I was hoping that the TV would be more powerful than that. Our previous TV (7 years old) had no problem using a media drive and the Humax while connected to a Firestick, so I just assumed it wouldn't be an issue here.

I have a Saorview box for another TV and a Ferguson Ariva, but I'm not really keen to add either to this TV - with a large Hi-fi and speakers, a DVD player/recorder, the Humax with various other 'accouterments' around the TV, enough is enough.

I'll see what Philips technical say and maybe anyone who knows of another TV that can do what I want would add their thoughts? I'll just have to decide if it's a dealbreaker for us ...

In Samsung series 6 and above models allow you to view from a HDMI source while recording Saorview to a usb disk or stick.

The Sony Android TV's can record from Saorview and you watch a different Saorview channel at the same time or watch another source.

The problem is that TV's keep being advertised as PVR's even though 95%+ of the PVR market here has been UPC/SKY boxes which allowed multi channel recording while watching another. ( as can Freesat HD ) Even VCR's didn't stop you watching something else on TV.

So it would be reasonable expected that something described as a PVR would be able to something other than be locked to channel being recorded.

Unfortunately the easiest way out may be to buy a second hand Saorview box and record on it.
