Do I need to wait for a postal arrival from the sale transaction before I apply for refund? I do have V5 but understand the post is related to this.

Also can I cash a UK cheque in Ireland. It is for £71. Will I end up with around a fraction of that after our banks' extortionate charges?

Are you the registered owner of the car? I'm sure the answer you need can be found on the DVLA website.

Ask your bank, it depends on what bank it's from but generally you shouldn't lose too much as most uk banks have agreements with irish banks

is the V5C in your name? The refund will be made to the registered owner as far as I'm aware and I thought it was automatic now in the UK. Ask DVLA

It is in my wife's name. We will look at that site when I get the car back. I'm just docking in fact. Thanks for replies.

your Wife has bought it, got the V5C sent through in her name and then she taxed it for the journey home and is now looking for the refund? Is that it?

Yes. That is it. Worth 92€ refund.
