Medical Expenses

I posted a Med1 Form to the Revenue for medical expenses. I had hoped to get a cheque back from them with 20% of my medical expenses but instead I got a P21 with 20% of my medical expenses under Panel 4 Tax Credits. Is this the same - I'm totally ignorant about it I'm afraid. I would really appreciate a reply from anybody who knows about tax. Thanks a mill.

Look on the first page of the P21 which will tell you the result of the year being reviewed. The result can be balanced (no refund due), overpayment (refund due) and underpayment (no refund due and you underpaid tax for the year reviewed).
The rest of the P21 is how the result was arrived at.

How long did it take them to reply?

Sent mine in 2 weeks ago and not a peep since. They're usually a lot quicker.

Since the self service PAYE Anytime exists which can give you a 48 hour turnaround, why would you choose the paper format?

Processing paper forms during one of the busiest periods of the year is going to vary from office to office depending on staff resources. That's one of the many reasons the self service channel exits.

relax carry on - Thank you very much for explaining the P21 to me. I am away at present but I will check it out according to your instructions when I get back.

mulco - I posted my Med1 form to the Revenue and it took nearly 4 weeks for the P21 to arrive.

I got the email yesterday from Revenue so all sorted now.

I usually do it online but they changed their system this year and it wouldn't cater for my situation so had to post them in.
