Can I use cold tap water instead of ice water to harden my teeth shape in the mouthguard because I have no ice tray to make ice?

    Cheers

I've only ever used two methods, ICE is best for sure but the alternative is (and this is going to sound really weird) but if you wee into a cup / basin and place the mouthguard into it after it's been set, the ammonia forces the guard to instantly harden and you just need to rinse it really well afterwards before use.

A lot of the Munster squad swear by it.

Considering the importance of a proper fitting mouth guard get yourself a bag of ice and follow the instructions to the letter. I wouldn't be going the Bear Grylls route myself.....

Also be sure to wash the cup. Ha.

If you're going to play for a team in Leinster ensure you use sparkling water to make the ice. Munster - use urine.

    Ice? Mouthguard?

All I've ever done is turn on the kettle, drop it in a mug of boiling water, and then put it in my mouth and bite down. I've never used ice or cold water to harden the gum shield.

This is what I used do, but that was back in 1993 :pac:

    +1.

I've been known to put it under the tap after. That's probably the Leinster coming out of me.

I've always just used cold water but that's what the instructions said to do

You have a fridge by the sounds of it and a freezer as well. Ice water is just very cold water. Stick a plastic bottle of water in your freezer for half an hour or so and you'll have very cold water.

You could leave it until it starts to freeze. That would be in about three to four hours.

    Job done.

Buy the cast kits and get a custom mouth guard. 100% worth it.

Every gumshield I ever had (and over the course of 25 years, there were a lot!) was moulded for me by my dentist. Never had one of those hot water ones, ever. The last couple I had even had my name embedded in the material. Your teeth are very important; get it done right!

(I suppose in the spirit of openness, I should say that my dentist is also my father, so he was always going to insist on the best care for my teeth.)

Always found the ones you mould yourself were annoying, could never get a proper fit.

I amble down to 3fe, soften up the gumshield in an organic rooibos tea, and once moulded I plunge it into one of the selections from the water tasting menu.

Ah, these young lads. I used to smelt a small horseshoe in my local forge and bite down on it. Hurt like hell, but well worth it.

    Munster under 10s?
Surely the actual Munster pros use better equipment than the stuff you throw in hot water to shape.
