(this is from a friend whose woes were recounted onto me via phone a moment ago and who desperately needs an alternative broadband service)

I'm not sure if 3 has withdrawn its service from other areas in the Dingle Peninsula, but it has withdrawn it from here.

There has been no 3 broadband here since 26 February 2016. Following initial claims that the mast was down, it was confirmed to us yesterday that the service per se is now gone in its entirety from this area, and our 3 account was duly closed. We had initially got broadband under the National Broadband Strategy, and after that ended in August 2014, the cost of the service rose by c. 40%, and the quality of service declined. Essentially, 3 could provide a service when the government paid them, but is now choosing not to. Given the government money that was given to this firm we feel the denial of service now should be given public attention (and be included in assessments of the "success" of the National Broadband Strategy).

As this is a time of year when communication via Skype and email with family abroad is very important, we feel this withdrawal of service more. More constructively, do we have any other alternative in this area? Go raibh maith agat/thank you.

For them to decommission an old mast means you're really really uneconomical to serve.

Looks like Kerry Broadband are your only hope, but if you live on a slop with now Line Of Sight to the east then you're in trouble.

NBS was always a temporary fix, it ending before the NBP started left loads in a crappy position but that's life unfortunately, there wasn't the funding for it.

I have Kerry Broadband and I highly recommend them.
I also have Three (4G) and a Satellite, which I rarely have to use as backups.

After the initial cost of Satellite it cheap enough but there is a 10G limit :), so it is only suitable for email, wikipeadia reading, not Skype...

I am fairly serious about me internet, I am not to far from you, but my Three is still working, but you are probably working off the Eagles hill mast.

My friend moved to Kerry Broadband. The connection was working until yesterday and last night it kept going into airport mode even though the modem was working OK (all green solid lights, one green flashing, no red lights) but KB keep fobbing her off saying it's a house problem. But the thing I'm concerned about it that they aren't even doing any of the initial diagnostics which UPC or the others would run with us in Dublin if we encountered similar problems - e.g. ethernet cable, going to an online ip address and so forth. Usually I can use Teamviewer to sort out her IT problems but because she has no internet that's not possible in this case.

The people at 066 7136657 aren't helpful to her at all. Does Kerry Broadband not have some obligation to try and fix this service that she's paying for?

OK, I have not had any significant problem with KB support one issue I raised with them turned out to be my fault. I did have problems last night too, but having said that if its going into "Airplane Mode" then it is a local issue i.e. if my internet stops working the wireless still stays up so it will get an address and connect to my "in house" wireless router. So even if your KB service is down you should not go into "airplane mode" because the device will still be able to connect to the wireless router.

But look KB are not UPC you cannot compare. Its like comparing your local hardware with B&Q they both have their pros & cons.

I do not work for KB, it is not my best mates company, but I do think they have done a great job providing rural broadband. I have tried everything else (apart from Laser's, which would be cool :) )
