High mileage with a 1.6D engine

Hi! I am hoping someone can give me some advice please.

I am looking at buying a new car and the one that I am interested is a 2012 Volvo S40 with a 1.6 diesel engine. However, it has 135,000 miles.
I know 1.9 and 2l diesel engines can take really high mileage but don't know if the 1.6D is the same in that respect. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Its' not astronomical by any means, but correct servicing and FSH are key.
If they start fudging and dodging about it being serviced correctly and can't back it up, i wouldn't bother.

It's high but definitely not in the do not buy category. As the poster above said make sure that it's been properly looked after. You may want to look at major service items too. When's the belt due (if it is a belt) and has the clutch/dmf been looked at. If not, how long do they typically last in that car? Be a pain to fork out for it and have to change the dmf in 6 months time.

Thanks a million for the replies! I haven't a clue really. It says it has a full service history and it comes with a 3 month warranty and there's only been one owner. Will ask about the clutch and belt. Is that the timing belt? Excuse my ignorance but what is a dmf?!!

Yeah the timing belt. It'll say in the car handbook when it's due, or a Google will tell you. I'm not the most mechanically gifted but from what I understand the dual mass flywheel, dmf, is part of the clutch set up. It's expensive to replace (1000 euro odd) but I'm not sure if it's the same as the belt that it has to be done at x number of miles. I read a guy on here is still on his original dmf after 250 k miles so take from that what you will. Someone better at these things might offer better advice.

Careful now! Sometimes it's a standard phrase put into any ad and when you probe/press on the issue (after a lot of "Shurre, she'll be grand, ah, the finesht, not a bother on her"), they will show you a logbook with 2-3 stamps max, covering less than half the services. Owners and garages here are notorious for that! One owner and warranty is a good sign though.
You need to find out the service interval and then look through the book to make sure each service lines up with the correct mileage.
And also make sure the seller is the owner, unless the seller is a reputable garage (which the warranty would imply). If the seller is a garage, is it a parking lot with a portacabin and flashy sign or a proper outfit?

Ok thanks I'll carefully look through the service book. The garage is in Dublin and I'm in Galway so have nothing to go on but their website. Says they are a family run dealership in business since 1995. Have a nice website too! Didn't see any flashy signs!! Can you name car dealers here for opinions? Thanks for the tips.

Do they operate out of a cottage in Ballymount?

I have this car, timing belt change is due 150K KM. I had to gut the dpf as the performance was piss poor at 125K KM. remapped and it a different car. I have 155k KM on it and have either a wheel bearing or tracking to done on the left side. Mate has a 2011 that has eaten 2 xenon ballast units and two gearboxes so buyer beware.

A short advice from uncle Billy: don't bother going...

Not enough cars around Galway? You're not looking for a rare exotic...

Doesn't seem that bad to me, I don't think we have enough information here to dismiss the dealer out of hand.

I am not saying that particular car or dealer is bad.
If I was in Dublin, I'd check it out. But I would not be driving 2h to see The Car. Driving that far puts additional pressure on too: once travelled that far it is less likely you'd walk away should there is something wrong.

Two hours is hardly far though! It's just Dublin. Obviously if the car was where I am based it would be ideal. I've gone further a field in the past. Thanks for the advice though!
