I got an email from a Thomas Dowell at Virgin Atlantic asking me, very nicely, if I had any last minute questions I happened to have about the flight or had any questions about seating or upgrades etc.

I have an economy-class ticket so I wasn't expecting an email like this from anyone, never had such a thing before, and it got me wondering if it's a normal thing from Virgin?! If so I think it's impressive customer service....before I even step on the aircraft I have a favourable impression...

Job done already, and they haven't even got your questions yet!

He couldn't give me a discount on premium economy though :(

Steep upgrade to it....219 sterling per person!

I think that would be regarded by most as quite cheap for a PE upgrade. A

A person sending 1000s of machine generated email costs little.
    It clearly works too.

    Maybe I'm too cynical.

it could be a bit of marketing, but equally it could be proactively encouraging people to get in touch if theyve special needs
i.e. suppose youve an infant and havent yet sorted a basinette, or youre a muslim and you want to ensure theres no pork in your meal (which already on the likes of Lufthansa is banished completely from all their planes, so your salami sambo is turkey salami rather than proper salami), then best contact them well in advance rather than mentioning it at checkin when its too late.

or even just to ensure families are seated together. I had friends who checked in at the airport last christmas to go back to the USA and ended up sitting all over the plane, and thats 2 adults and 2 small kids.

Virgin Atlantic are a decent airline, I took the family out to Shanghai last year with VA and found the whole experience to be good.
Food was good, better on outwards leg, legroom and comfort good and the 787 was a nice experience, nicer than the A380 for sure, good lighting and nice cabin ambience.
