It's a hard question to answer ......... how much money do I need to survive or how much money do I need to live the life I want to live?

I could survive with beans on toast and a 13.5 tog duvet ......... to live the life I'd like to live we're talking Bill Gates type budget.

I live rent/mortgage free, rent out 2 room which gives me about 600 a month, I'm a naturally frugal person but that couldn't be kept up long term, im paying college fees at the moment, leaves little room for a bit of a life, I think I'd quite easily and happily live on 300 a week if it came to it, I currently live on about 40/50 week after expenses and fees.
Short term pain for long term gain

To answer this question, you first need to ask yourself these two questions:
    • Assuming all those things were paid off, what would you need tomorrow to live comfortably for one year if you stopped working?
    • How many years more until you want to retire?

Let's say answer to question 1 is 35,000
...and let's say answer to question 2 is 20 years.

We must now roughly calculate how much we would spend 20 years in the future to have an equivalent purchasing power of 35k in today's money. To do this, we must estimate what the annual average inflation is likely to be over the next 20 years. This is educated guesswork. But for our example, let's say we expect 2.5% inflation.

By compounding 35k by 2.5% per annum over 20 years gives us a value of 57,351. This is what you need to spend during the first year of your retirement to have an equivalent purchasing power of 35k in today's money.

But here's the catch -- guidance is to not draw down more than 4% per annum of your retirement pot.

So, 57,351 is 4% of your total retirement pot. Therefore, you need 1.433775 million euros.*

Are you also talking about planning for the future, having an emergency fund etc of working on the assumption the €600 a week will just keep on coming & you'll die before the job ends?

Right now, our biggest expenses are the kids (school & Creche) & the mortgage, Car is paid off & is running grand so no need to change it every five years etc. other expenses add up on a monthly basis, so working on a month, with an emergency fund & NO future planning, about €600 With future planning about €1000, & with kids nearly €2000 & with mortgage nearly €3000 - divide those figures by 4.3 for weekly amounts, I could't be arsed.

    Stuck inside these four walls,
    Sent inside forever,
    Never seeing no one
    Nice again like you,
    Mama you, mama you.

If I ever get out of here,
Thought of giving it all away
    To a registered charity.
All I need is a pint a day
If I ever get outta here
If we ever get outta of here

Of course when he got out Paul McCarthy didn't give it all to charity and settle for a pint. He's now a Billionaire.
