Any recommendations of primers that actually do help control oil? My t-zone gets very shiny after a few hours, despite using a Smashbox colour correcting primer.

MakeUp Forever mattifying primer. Its very thick so you need a tiny amount (half a pea size for my entire face) and really work it into the skin, leave it to settle for a few minutes before applying foundation over it otherwise the foundation will not go on properly over it.
