neighbour is having his confirmation soon. Rather than giving him cash I was thinking of giving him some shares in the Vanguard Etf or something like that, say €150, so that he has to leave it there for the next 10years or something like that

is there a way that I can give him a paper cert for €150 so that he doesn't have account maintenance and all that to worry about and eat away his €150

The dealing charges on a purchase of €150 worth of shares will destroy you. Campbell O'Connor will do it for €40 without an account, but then you've got to remember that you'd need to sell them again at some point, costing another €40.

You've really only got two options, hand the money over in cash or buy a 10 year National Solidarity Bond that yields 25% after 10 years.
