Waiting period for broadband installation

I've recently moved house and I require broadband as I work from home. I couldn't take my virgin media account with me as despite moving to an urban area they aren't in my new estate. The last tenant had Sky but they tell me that it'll take 6 weeks to get access to the line from Eir. I've tried Vodafone and they have told me the same story...28 working days to open a new account. How can this be right? No business would have to wait this long for access to high speed fibre broadband. Has anybody else come up against this problem?

I always assumed it was 5-10 business days. A month seems like a long time

That's what I thought. I am pretty shocked. Both sky and Vodafone tell it takes that length of time to acquire and activate the line from Eir.

I placed an order with Eir on 21st February and it was installed on 8th March.

I was in the same position as you OP, moved house and could not take virgin media with me as it wasn't available. Went with Vodafone and it took 5 and half weeks from when I ordered it, to having active broadband. Disgraceful.

I was hoping to avoid Eir as I have had a terrible experience with them before. It took 6 months to resolve an issue with overcharging. Eir seem to obviously hold back access to the line to make their service the more appealing one against their competitors

If the existing line is still active it's 10wking days to electronically enable it.

If the line isnt active its up to 10wking days to have an install done then another 10 for bb activation.

If the last tenant has abandoned the account you've to wait on the delinquency process to have the account nuked without the account holders permission. This takes ages.

The previous tenant has closed their account and has paid up (as opposed to abandoning the acc). 4 weeks is still pretty bad to get bb activated. Sky couldn't even take my custom today as they can't access the line from Eir for another few weeks. So I have to play the waiting game until they can.

    Easily 5-ish weeks.

It should only be 10 wking(14 calendar) days to do so. The metal path is already in place so when they make order it should be a quick job. Only potential delay is Sky use their own guys so that adds a little time.

In my case, the line was physically present but dead. No sign of a dial tone at all.

I placed the order and was given the install date the next day. An installer from KNN arrived on that day and discovered that my line was direct fed back to the exchange rather than the local cab! Apparently the cable measured at over 2000m long and must have been very old. He moved me on to another pair that went back to the local cab. My broadband was active straight away. The PSTN was initially on a soft dial tone with a temporary number but activated within a couple of hours. Couldn't fault the service really, in his words it was a handy one. A much better experience than the last time I tried to get ADSL in Drumcondra!

Is it DSL or fibre you're ordering?

I was hoping to order fibre. The speeds aren't too different with DSL though as the estate is at the furthest point from cabinet
