A Friend of mine is looking to relocate to Ireland (Married to Irish National) , and is currently working as a medical dispatcher, previously a paramedic in Canada.

Information sought is regarding HSE job rotation / job swaps between Ireland and Canada, and if qualifications are transferred seamlessy between countries, or are there further tests to be achieved to meet Irish standards.

If I have missed something, do not hesitate to post ..

For the Paramedic qualification, there are similarities between the Canadian and Irish qualification, however your friend would need to seek advice and apply for state recognition through the Pre Hospital Emergency Care Council. There are tests and fees attached to this.

Regarding their Dispatcher qualification, similar again, especially if your friend is licensed on the American designed AMPDS then this qualification is recognised in Ireland.

Having said that, there is no direct route into the National Ambulance Service so your friend would have to wait for a recruitment competition.

The lack of geographic knowledge may be a serious impediment, both as a dispatcher and as a paramedic / driver.

Advise on recognition of qualifications is absolutely correct, if any chance, go down this route, much better pay prospects. Quite a straight forward process, PHECC have facilitated quite a few people going the other way, and are familiar with educational standards etc.

There is a permanently open paramedic recruitment campaign, have a look on public jobs.ie. Pay is not great starting out in either realm, but paramedic is slightly better. Geographic knowledge is not a huge barrier with technology, and you would likely be working with someone who has a general idea of where they are.
