Chain coming off

    Hi All,

Late last year I got new the wheels for my bike. The new wheels came with a spacer which my LBS fitted when changing the cassette for me. There was no spacer on the original wheels. Since then the chain has been coming off regularly when I change gears, both drive and rear. I am blaming the spacer and plan to go back to the LBS and have it removed. I would like some opinions as to whether my assumption is (probably) correct before I go back to the LBS and have the spacer removed.

Thank in advance for any advice

Sometimes a spacer is necessary. Maybe it just needs indexing.

But some more info about your bike would be helpful. What bike? What were the previous wheels and what are the new ones. How many gears?

When is the chain coming off? Large or smallest cog on the rear? Big or small ring on the front?

The chain coming off at the front wont be anything to do with the addition of a spacer at the rear and may simply need a slight adjustment (barrel adjuster or limit screws)

It is unlikely the spacer is the problem at the rear either. Your old wheels were (i'm guessing) 10spd whereas the new wheels are 11spd compatible and so you need the rear spacer. Was the rear derailleur adjusted/indexed after the new wheels were fitted.

Its most likely a simply adjustment that is needed front and rear and your LBS can do it within a few minutes while you wait.

Noting to do with the spacer....spacer just is there to tighten cassette or to allow for 9..10..or 11 speed cassettes.
Chain drop is caused by gears needing adjustment

Gears need indexing, the spacer isnt the issue.
