Changing job which means I need to now commute, will be at least 50kms per day, so I need to get rid of my current BMW 2.2 petrol 320 CI coupe and get something more economical, so looks like I'll need a diesal.

Im after something thats sporty and has a bit of a punch, but also comfortable, max tax is 1k and a max budget of 10k, dont care what year it is. Would also love a car with a good sound system to as i like my music.

Took an Is220d for a test drive and didnt like it at all. Dont like the look of the 5 series BMWs. Took a diesal Brera for a spin and didnt fancy it. Would like an A5 but they're outside my budget. Now thinking of an e92? Anything else i should consider?

Are you changing your car because you think you will save money or do you actually want to buy a new/different car? 50km per day commute is not huge and the savings in spending thousands to buy a diesel are questionable. Fair enough if you want to change but it sounds like you already have the ideal car for the job.

Ive had my BMW for 2 years now and its a lovely car but I fancy a change. On top of my work commute I drive to Cork most weekends and my current car is costing me about 60 quid return...

in terms of long trips, the bro and I both have 325ci and he also has a 530 auto. The 530 is quite a bit better on long trips mpg and comfort wise. I had the 325 on the motorway yesterday for first time in a few months, have driven the 530 on it frequently. Id maybe go for a 5 series 525 or maybe 530. I prefer the 325 coupe for city driving, but give me the 530 for motorway driving everyday!

Alternatively if you like the coupes, you could go with a 2L 6 speed diesel... maybe an e92, they are meant to be quite a bit more refined than E46...

you would get the below for your budget...

keep an eye out on bmwdrivernet also...

I take it, thats its the E60 5 series you dont like the look of, surely its not the E39 below, which is stunning?

50 kms a day (31 miles) in your 320 will give 23 mpg at worst and 38 at best if it's anything like my 525 on petrol. 23 bumper to bumper traffic 38 if it's all motorway. So it will use between 0.8 and 1.2 gallons which at current prices is somewhere between 5 and 6 quid a day. A more economical car will save you 2 quid a day or so. Is it worth it? Maybe, only you can say. Might save 20 quid on the cork trip though but I suggest this will not save you money at all. If you want a new car though, go for it. E92 diesel good call

Edit: only just realised now you travel to cork every week that changes things a bit start looking diesel it should pay you back

with the cork trip alone, I wouldnt be bothered with the 320ci, its only now that I have driven the E39 530, that I realise how relatively uncomfy the E46 m sport coupes are on long distance...

Also can you really justify with the cork trips throwing E100 a week in on juice, to that car?

Id be going for something more economical and comfortable...

You are in budget for an a good few 07 e92 320d. Nice cars. Bigger selection as the year goes on and prices drop a bit. Beware the timing chain problem though but there are ways to make sure you dont get caught with this. 08s possibly coming in budget later this year so you could go for a 325d if you can find one
