Olive tree advice

    I want to grow an olive tree in a planter on my patio. I know it takes more than my lifetime to grow into one of the fantastic specimens that you see selling for for 1,600 Euro, but I was told that the small olives that you buy in garden centre will never grow this big due to their rootstock.

    Is it possible to buy a small plant now that will grow over time and future generations into a magnificent specimen?

    Seems yes, they wont ever get big, but its a beautiful tree, I say just buy one and go for it

    Thanks for the links Billy Shears. Seems the tree will grow away but not to the height of the ones in warmer climes. I'll probably plant away, maybe put some lavenders and eryngiums in the planter too to avail of the soil conditions.

    Also , I was thinking..if I want something to still be there in 4,000 years I could always get a rock.

    If you grow the tree in a planter if will never form a proper root system, as after a few years it becomes potbound, so growing it in a planter would be for amusement purposes only.

    I have grow a number of trees in pots. After a year or two in the dormant period it is important to take the tree out of the pot and put into a bigger pot, sometimes trimming the roots. Also have a tray under the pot, full of water, to ensure water is always available to the tree. that way you can enjoy the tree for many years to come.
