    Hi all,
Just wondering about buying cattle on the land and when they are paid for. If stock are bought privately do you pay for them on the day you buy or when you collect them which could be a number of days later? If you pay for them on the day should you get the cards?

    Thanks in advance.

I pay when collected or delivered and the seller holds onto the permit until the cheque clears.

I always like to get paid with bank draft on day of collection, safe for buyer and seller.

Bank drafts can be forged there's some horror stories. They can also with draw the funds after handing over the bank draft when the seller goes to cash it in the money is gone.

Bank drafts can be forged, however a bank draft does not go out of date & cannot be stopped/funds withdrawn as the buyer of the bank draft pays upfront for it with cash or withdrawal from his/her account. The money it then held by the Bank in the Bank's account until the draft is cashed, if that makes sense.

Credit union withdrawal cheques are just that, cheques, and as such can be stopped like any other cheque AFAIK.

If your worried about how payments work, then it's probably safer for you to stick to the marts. Weights, values and a lot can be hidden when buying off the land.

I would have to say if I was buying I would prefer to be on someones farm getting a fuller idea of what I,m buying rather than in a mart where you have no idea of the farm the cattle came from, but yes mart is the safest way to sell animals but probably not the best way to buy.
