Deal with store or manufacturer?

Apologies if this is the wrong place please feel free to move it as appropriate.

I purchased a games console in June of last year, it has developed a fault. Do I return it to store or go straight to the manufacturer? I'm not sure where the stores legal responsibilities end.

Your consumer rights rest with the retailer not the manufacturer. If the manufacturer is easier to deal with, by all means do; but if you need to enforce consumer rights its the retailer.
