Usually how long does it take for potential employers to contact you after...

    ....applying for a job application? I have applied for a couple of jobs and I was just wondering what is the usual length of time it takes for potential employers to contact you for an interview after a successful job application? In other words how many days would you expect to wait for a reply before determining you were not successful?

    I went for an interview 12 months ago and still waiting to hear if I got it.:)

    I applied for a position last September, got automated response that if I didn't hear anything within 3 weeks, I could assume I was unsuccessful. Got an interview in late November for that position.

    My last position, I sent in a CV, was confident about it but after 4 weeks I assumed I wouldn't be called, got called at that stage, second interview was 2 weeks later with no word in between and got the position a week after the second interview.

    I'd take it a step further and say today it's more rule rather than exception that you hear nothing if unsuccessful for the first interview :/

    Varies wildly from company to company depending on the position you are applying for and the urgency of the appointment. Also some companies are really efficient, others are not. I wouldn't blame companies too much for not responding to everybody. They can receive hundreds of applications for a single position and resources can be thin, particularly in smaller companies who may not have a dedicated hr department. Unless it's a very specialised position it can be a bit of a lucky dip to get the interview.


    If you haven't heard anything at all after a few weeks though I'd say you need to forget it and move on.
