It is very rare to find a tractor in that "very good" condition with that price tag.
I'm sure he would be open to stupid offers though like €9,500. It's only stupid offers like €950 he doesn't want.

I've found an even rarer one :-)

God knows what the asking price could be.

Are 188s considered rare? Farmers near us still two of them I think and they seemed to be plenty of them around when I was young ?

I know that's a rubbish example but in general, would they be considered rare and desirable?

They would be rare in the west anyway. 135's would have been the weapon of choice and then 165's for baling and cutting silage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 445 ✭✭rs8

id say a 188 4wd plated out of factory would be hard to come by!!

Yeah they would be rarer than those 2 but not very rare. You still see the odd one knocking around the west.

    I know of two 188s around here, I reckon a 178 with multi-power would be a lot rarer than a 188.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Does anyone else get paid to look at boards All Day? I got this Job through a friend of a friend as an IT Coordinator (no interview required just started straight away) , i have a bit of experience with computers but that's it, I wouldn't know how to repair a PC if it just died a death and thank god nobody has came to me with this issue just yet or i will be found out (about 30 work in the office, i am the only "IT" guy) i have been asked stuff i haven't a clue about like Proxy servers, Ports and all that kind of technical stuff,

Used to have a 188 same as in picture. And a 185. The 185 was much nicer to drive as it was shorter and better steering lock. Sold them in 2000 for 1500 each to africa

I'll get a few pics. The engine is placed into a hollowed out chassis. They look the same as the normal 76. I think they were put together in Ireland but I'm not a 100 percent certain

clean/restored 2wd 188's are worth about 5-7k exceptional ones a touch more. clean 4wd ones are 8k and up most usually ask 10k plus. The lad in the op is a dreamer but shur it's not a crime to dream! He'll get the picture when no one comes to look at it.
I would however disagree about the 5 series vs 8 series I always found the 8 series tractors mighty on the road thanks to the sandwich plate and lengthend wheelbase, very stable and not at all bouncy which was rare for a tractor of that era. the 5's were a better yard tractor alright but apart from that I'd have the 8's as better.

Had a 188 until last year. It was in bits, engine had to be redone, wiring shot and to lift a bale, the tractor had to be left running for at least a half hour. A lad bought it for €3750 for the Africans.

I have a 178 literally in bits, sold it for €700 for parts, man paid 200 deposit for it a year ago and am still waiting on him to collect

Rare enough alright I know of two 996 4wd tractors not too far from me and there was a 4wd 1210 on donedeal a while back but they're thin on the ground thats for sure. They don't pull the money the rare masseys or fords make but sill great tractors all the same.
Anything 4wd from the mid 70's or before tends to be rare there's a 4wd major not far from me as well none of these were factory produced though they were converted by companies who sourced them straight from ford such as County or Doe.

When I saw your name was thinking you'd know of a few around!! Those 996s would be lovely looking machines. Also the 4wd 188 shown earlier is very eye catching never seen anything like them down my way....closest thing would be a Ford 5000 4wd alrite.

A neighbour has a Ford 4600 Four, which I think was built by County. Only one I ever saw.

Know a guy in Longford who brought back either a MF 1130 or 1150 from America. I had pictures of it on my last phone but unfortunately the phone died and I lost the pics.

Just on 7600's, I believe the very early ones with the Ford safety cab are rarer (not necessarily more valuable) than a 7000.

They are rare because they were only made for 1 year, between 1975-76.

a 188 with 4wd would be very rare indeed no matter what condition its in. Price for that one might be high but at the same time someone actually might want one enough to pay that money. Id have no doubt that if you were into the vintage scene that a nice 188 4wd would attract a lot of attention and some lads would love that and therefore pay the money to have a rare/different tractor.

if it was in good condition, you would also get a nice bit of work out of it. if you didn't mind driving old tractors, it would be a handy one as a second tractor with 4wd which wouldn't have a lot of things to go wrong with it. for example for some lads it might be handy to cart out a few loads of slurry while the main tractor was on the agitator.

He claimed to remember the Massey 135 and the 172.
Being a Wexford man, could easily have cut his teeth on a 272.
They were popular down that corner of the country.

Doubt he cut his teeth on the 200 series. He would/should have been well out of short pants by the time they arrived here ;)

Let us know how you get on. A 399 was sold for export recently for roughly 1/3 the asking price of that.

There was a 399 on done deal recently for about 8K. Would be superior buying to the 188 even if you had to spend a few pound on it.
