    Hi,

I'm just wondering if anyone here would be familiar with the BMW E92 facelift models which came with a USB connection in the centre armrest...

I'm seriously thinking of buying an E92 facelift coupe in the UK and I'd like to put a deposit on the car, but I just need to clarify the functionality of the USB connection locate in the armrest compartment...

I'm just wondering whether it is possible to connect an iPhone to the USB socket with a USB lightning cable and whether it will charge the phone when it's plugged in and whether it will be able to play music from the phone through the car's stereo?

    Thanks.

Thanks, I read the other thread, but it doesn't really answer the question I asked...

I know you can purchase a very short aux/usb y cable to connect a phone or iPod, which will keep everything inside the centre armrest. However, I'd like to know if you can just use the regular length usb lightning cable on its own to connect a phone / iPod as I'd prefer to use this option and I'd like to be able to control music from the iPod itself where I could place it near the gear lever.

It depends on the options fitted. Our 2008 E60 has logic 7 and 6FL options fitted. This allows connection of the older iPods through the Y cable and you get the info on screen and control through the steering wheel ect. It also allows USB stick connection and plays the music files through that.

It will not play music from an iPhone but it does charge our iPhone 6. The standard lightning cable will only allow charging IIRC.
Our F10 allows music streaming but they are a different kettle of fish.

Ask the seller for the option list and check for 6FL options and what version of the combox the car has as this will determine what it's functionality is.

Some of the E90s don't have a usb connection. The UK car which I'm interested has a USB and Aux connection in the centre arm rest.

Thank you for a detailed response.

I am very interested in this particular car as it has unusually low mileage and Msport spec with 19-inch wheels. I suppose I could always get an iPod connection kit if I needed one, although I had one in my old car and it was a disaster- the sound was terrible as there was constant interference when playing the iPod through the car stereo.

I hope you're researching more than just the usb compatibility. :)

Surely if it has AUX and you want to control it from the ipod then you're sweet and all you need is a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable?

I've no experience of these models but I would bet that the usb will do charging while you use the aux to play music. You will get no steering/head unit controls or song info on screen though.

If charging off of the USB port causes problems like entering car/sync mode then you could use a condom :pac:

It's all very confusing. My 2009 520d would not play an app (such as TuneIn) through the official BMW iPhone USB/Jack cable but it did play what was on the iPod and show the track info/allow steering wheel control.

I've just tried the BMW cable in my 2008 6 series and that does the above but also plays the music from an app - something I've really missed from the F10 I had as that had Bluetooth streaming, like nearly every car in 2016 at this stage.

In short though, your normal iPhone white USB cable will not be recognised by your car apart from the charging aspect.
