Lost second learner permit.

    Hi,

Just wondering the way to move forward here. I'm applying for a third learner permit which obviously requires me to apply for the test first, but that requires my license number and I've lost my license. Will I find out my number or will that number be changed when the licence is replaced, and will that effect me when the test comes around?

You need to report it to the Guards as lost. Fill the form out and go to the NDLS with it. Your driver number won't change.

I think you can book a test using your PPSN but I'm open to correction. If you do need your driver number, you can always ring the NDLS with your PPSN and they'll tell you your driver number so you can apply for a test in advance of going to the NDLS centre.

By reporting it to the Guards, what you need to do is fill out the application form (D201 which you can download and print) and bring it to the Garda station. The form has a lost/ stolen declaration and that requires a Garda stamp and signature.

Just to add to MascotDec85 mentioned about your licence number, it will *never change as it's essentially your ID number for your driving licence so even if your pass your test and go on to apply for learner permits for other categories, this driver number will always be the number used.

*It's possible that some people have held different driver numbers over the years but this is essentially a cock-up and the NDLS have to check for and merge multiple driver number files to ensure a driver's record is complete.

Thanks guys so applied for the test anyway. Just another question, does it have to be a local guard and your local licence centre you have to attend? I'm going to Dublin Thursday and it would be handy to pop in to a guard station there because there's rarely a guard in my local station.

Any Garda station will do. All you need is a signature and a stamp.

Does anyone have a phone number for NDLS?

I lost my card (almost immediately - pretty stupid I know). Must I report it to the guards too? Do I need to go through all the eye sight tests and visits out to the NDLS centre nonsense again?

I have emailed them a few times with these questions but nothing back. Extremely frustrating. They seem a pretty incompetent organisation......

you do have to report it to the guards. You won't have to do they eyesight test again but you will need to go back to the NDLS.

Ok, great - that is not too bad - cheers Aon :)

Presume it will cost me more money?!?!

€35 for a lost/ stolen replacement. As long as nothing has changed in terms of your personal details, you need bring an application, stamped and signed by a Guard, valid photo ID such as a passport or public services card and the dough.

Great, thanks cantdecide. I guess it could be worse. Obviously it is my own fault for losing the card but it is a bit depressing that this newly set up public service body seems just as, if not more, archaic and inefficient as so many public bodies set up before it. Still haven't heard a word back from them! Mad really

Anyways..... Need to just make sure I don't lose the next one now!

The whole thing is an outsourcing exercise so resources and customer service are not a higher priority than cost saving. You could complain to the RSA but I shouldn't think they'd care very much, tbh.

Jumping in on this thread - my learner permit was robbed (along with my purse) and I never replaced it until now, when I've realised it would be expired now anyway. Do I need to submit as if I was replacing a stolen permit, or as though I was renewing my old one?

I actually had lost mine but the expiry is/was not until 2018 or something. I got the relevant form signed and stamped by the guards saying it was lost which was very straightforward. I then went back to NDLS and they said no bother, give us the form and 35 quid and we will just issue you another card with the exact same expiry date.

So I don't think you will be able to just replace your old one. Or at least there would be no point as they would just issue you an out of date.

    If I were you would I just give them a call. I finally got a number for them - +353 (0) 761 087 880

I emailed them with my query but it took them about 5 working days to get back to me.

It's the same application form and fee. The only difference is that you'll have to fill out the lost/ stolen declaration part of the form and have it stamped and signed by a Guard. The other rules will be the same as regards your personal details eg, if you've changed name or address, you'll need proof.
