Windows 7 x64 - How to minimize backround applications?

    On my Windows 7 laptop (old and slow) I run one program at a time only.

    I use it for live capture of photography images direct from a camera.

    It has FireWire, which I must have for one of the cameras, so changing it would be a pain.

    The problem, with only 3Gb RAM, frequent reboots are required.

    How can I configure it so that only the bare necessity of required applications are running, alongside the one photography program I'm using at that time?

    I presume it's via Task Manager, but how?

    Before you start check the number of processes (tick 'all users') in Task manager. Anything over 60 is probably too much.

    Get CCleaner, it's free; http://filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
    Go to Tools/Startup/Windows and disable anything that's not needed. (Can always be re-enabled again if needed)
    Check 'Scheduled Tasks' tab and disable any unneeded items there. (Keep any update ones enabled like Adobe updater)
    I usually like to keep start-up items to a minimum so I just have Anti-Virus & Google drive enabled.

    That's not all you can do, though.
    Run Junkware Removal Tool; http://filehippo.com/download_junkware_removal_tool/
    &
    also it's worth running Adwcleaner https://toolslib.net/downloads/viewdownload/1-adwcleaner/

    After all that, check your process number again, should be down to about 45-55.
