Wide/open bore and open MRIs

Mods, if this is better in the Health Sciences forum, please feel free to move.

I have had a good few MRIs on my leg but due to a shoulder injury that hasn't healed with rest and physio, I need to have a MRI on my shoulder. I never had an issue with previous scans as I went into the tube feet first and only ever up to my chest/shoulders so my head was always outside the tube. I went for a scan a couple of weeks ago on my shoulder and ended up panicking due to being so claustrophobic as soon as I was put head first into the tube. I didn't expect to panic at all, but unfortunately I did!

Does anybody know of any wide/open bore or open MRIs in Dublin? Has anybody been in one and felt more comfortable? I think there may be a wide/open bore machine in Euromedic in Santry but not 100% sure on that just yet. I'm already not looking forward to it, but if I can get a different size machine, it will definitely help

Euromedic in Santry, now called Affidea, have the wide bore machines, I think they ask you routine questions when booking and you can opt for the more open one.

Was there last week with a friend who was anxious but who had been in this open bore machine a few months ago and lasted just about with the help of some Xanax from the dr. Unfortunately panicked last week and didn't even get started. I think the problem was insufficient meds. Consult your gp first, I reckon and know how much and when to take meds.
    Best of luck.

I have had my scan done. I took some Xanax beforehand, I don't think it made a big different, it just took the edge off slightly. What really helped me was an eye mask and a radiographer who was excellent. Explained the situation to him and he helped me through it.

    Glad you got through it.

Recent mri there, too, and found the radiographer very reassuring. Had the headphones for music, but tbh, with the noise of the mri machine I could barely hear the music at all.
I was lucky in that my head was only slightly inside the tube, I could see the ceiling of the room if I looked up and back. That helped a lot.
