Hi guys. Thinking of buying a second car, insurance is the complication though. With 123 at the moment, they wont allow me to insure a second car and apply NCB to both. I have open drive, can I get my bro who doesnt have a license to buy it and have ownership in his name, then use my open drive on it, in which case I am legally insured to drive it?

    No.

There is nothing stopping someone with no license from buying a car. The problems however are:

    - You'll still need to tax it. Not a big issue. Anyone can do this.
    - You'll need an NCT, again, not a big issue. Anyone can do this.
    - You'll need a valid insurance disc if you are driving in public. This could be a problem as you can't swap discs between cars. Its only for the car you have the policy on. Remember, there two separate offences: Driving uninsured AND driving in public place without a valid insurance disc on display. The latter isn't a penalty point offence but you could rack up some fines along with awkward conversations with Gardai.
    - Some open drive policies require the other car to be insured to try prevent this type of work around, you'll need to check your individual terms of insurance.

All in, you're probably better off with a bog standard policy with the cheapest insurance you can find, obviously depending how risk adverse you are etc.

tax and nct no issue. yeah I checked an 123 dont require the other car to be insured. yeah the disc situation is tricky alright...

Third party cover would only apply when you're behind the wheel. If anything happened to it when it's parked or it was robbed it wouldn't be covered

What would happen if you had it parked and somebody ran into it or tripped over the tow bar! You can't have an insured car in a public place as far as I know? Would you'd brother be liable as he owns the car and there was no insurance on it?
