Powercity

So I recently bought my laptop in Powercity in Fonthill. I needed it to play a game (League of Legends) and for the future when I go to college. Okay, I did some research before hand on what a laptop needs and I got so many opinion that I was really confused. I decided to ask a salesperson when I get there.

I talked to this worker and explained everything to him. That it needs to be a really strong computer because the game needs that. He recommended me getting this computer and I was really happy since it was only 420. However when I got home and played the game I realized that NOPE this computer is extremely slow for the game and not what I have asked for. It is impossible to play my game. Okay I looked at my receipt which said they will return it if the box is unopened. I'm sorry what?

I went back and they wouldn't return it. They said it was used and therefore they can't take it back. They said they called the hq (which I'm 100% sure they didn't because there was no time). I talked to the guy who sold me this thing and he said 'you can play SOME games on it'....I asked him for a really strong computer for League of Legends and he's telling me now it's for SOME games?? So how weak is it then and why you sold it to me?? :D

They told me to email their boss and that they will give it to me. It's funny that I asked them for it and only then they said it's on the receipt. Did they get scared or..? Left there crying.
Later that they I sent a letter to their hq address and I got a reply today....Nothing good either and they ignored everything I said which I didn't even mention here.

The thing is I'm 18 still in 6th year. I earned the money myself and trusted their workers to get me a good computer because I REALLY need a laptop now. I hoped for their sympathy but nope..I got nothing. I even found a laptop for 630 which I know will be good (to find out what it needed my parents and I have asked toons of people) I am even ready to exchange this laptop for another one in their shop paying even more money :) But they won't. Now I'm stuck here with no money and no laptop for the future :) 18 year old thinking that the world is good and fair. What can I do now? I went through so much crying and effort to get something and I got nothing

You wanted to play a particular game. The box of the game would have shown the spec of the laptop required (http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/requirements/league-of-legends/10933/?p=a).

Did you ask the sales person if the laptop had these specs? Because the chance of someone that works in Power City knowing what League of Legends actually is and the specs required to run it are slim. They're not a specialist PC seller.

You can still use the laptop for college in the future. Either that or sell it to someone on adverts, take what you sell it for and add to it to buy the €630 laptop you saw (not sure why you didn't buy that one in the first place).

You asked the salesman for a laptop capable of playing one particular game and that is not what was provided so you are due a refund or credit against the laptop needed.

You need to look up and read about the small claims court and how it works. You may need to start a case in the small claims court.(cost is €25).

The company have your money now and would like to keep it so don't expect any help from them.

The very first thing to do is write to or email the shop manager giving full details of what you asked for and how you got something else. Tell them you want this resolved within a reasonable time (2weeks) or you will start a case inmthemsmall claims court.

If they do not sort it out within that time then go through the process and the court will make the decision for ye both.

Did you use the same grammar during the transaction that you used in your post?

Could have been a communication issue.......

I've never had issue with power city to be fair. But I wouldn't recommend buying a laptop off them.

I didn't know much about laptops. I did research but people didn't give me good advice. I did look at their online store for amd and nvidia but their search is bad. only found that laptop after I put computer brands in. And this was after I got the computer. I expect the guy who is in the charge of the laptop section to atleast know something about it. I don't have the money now. I can't sell this computer for 420. It won't be enough for a good laptop.

You should have did your research before buying, you seem well it able to do it after you purchased.

As the poster above said, if you wanted it for a specific game, it's says what specs are needed on the back of the game box.

When the OP asked for a laptop that would play league of legends and a different laptop was provided which can't play the game then the shop have supplied a product that is not as described (can't play the game they said it could play) and also not fit for its stated purpose.

No, the OP says that they said it needs to be a 'really strong computer'
I talked to this worker and explained everything to him. That it needs to be a really strong computer because the game needs that.

He didn't say that he told the salesperson the specifications needed to run the game. If he told the salesperson the specifications needed and the salesperson gave him a sub-specc'ed laptop then he might have a case but that's not what happened according according to the OP.

The laptop can play league of legends though? Does the laptop meet the minimum requirements to play the game?

The game box would probably give minimum requirements and recommended requirements.

It's not a game you buy in the shop. There is no box for it. It's and online game you download.
I don't want to take this to court since I don't know how much I have to pay (excluding the 25 euro). I'm afraid if I lose it how much will I have to pay?

It does play league of legends.

I've never heard of this game before and found the specs for it in 20 seconds.

If you got to small claims court and loose you will loose nothing more.

The online download will still show the minimum requirements the same as a box would.

    What laptop did you buy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71,186 ✭✭✭✭L1011

If you didn't give them a specific spec to ask if it met it, you really have no case for misselling. 420 is still a cheap laptop and definitely does not have a dedicated graphics card for that price like the specs recommend.

Powercity probably have the best customer service and lack of sales bull**** of any of the electronics retailers going here.

OP - no serious gamer would ever play games on a laptop.

What are the specs of the laptop and what are the specs of the game? If you were not able to sell the sales assistant what specs you needed, its unreasonable to expect him/her to make an appropriate recommendation

If you didn't show the required specs to the sales rep then its hard to fault the sales rep. Telling them you need a "really strong computer" isn't really very specific.

The game plays so its likely the min specs for the game have been met, the game merely does not play as you want it to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,342 ✭✭✭seagull

If the sales assistant didn't know anything about the requirements for the game, he should have said so, and had a look, not just given an assurance it would be ok. There's a big difference between something running, and something running at an acceptable way. Running an online game on a low-spec machine tends to result in horrible lag, which means you just get blitzed. LoL might not need the biggest and best machine, but you need something reasonable.

Based on what the OP says, I'd consider this particular laptop to have been missold.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 177 ✭✭Dashticle

The fault is on the rep for assuring the OP the game would run to be honest, yeah OP you should have checked the specs first but the rep should not have told you it would work without checking himself.

Sounds like they gave you the run around about 'phoning the boss' too, if I were you I would go back and talk to the manager in person, explain you were told the laptop would run the game but doesn't, and if they don't agree there to give you credit for a better one, tell them it'll be small claims.

It won't be expensive. 25eu only according to above posters/

edit: even if the OP only said 'I want a strong laptop for games' or something silly and vague like that, the rep should still have known he'd at least need some sort of dedicated gfx card, sounds like they tried to unload a lemon on someone who didn't know any better tbh

If the OP mentioned the game specifically as League of Legends the first response would/should be "well what specs does that require and I can tell you if the laptop is suitable."

    Simple logic.

By the sounds of it, the rep just wanted to make a sale and the OP probably very keen and maybe didn't do enough research. I think, both parties are a little bit responsible but Powercity can make good on this by offering her a trade-in or discount on a higher spec laptop. This way she would be more inclined to return and Powercity make the sale.

Firstly what laptop did you get?

Secondly does the machines hardware match or exceed the minimum requirements of the game. If yes then this is the only info that was provided to the salesman and the fact you accepted it means you both agreed. Did the salesman offer you a more expensive model laptop?
