I got a job offer with Oracle at the end of last month and they emailed me out the contract a few days later. My one sticking point is the background check. I filled everything out for the background check company about a week ago and haven't heard anything since. My start date is this middle of this month and I was wondering does anyone have any experience with these background checks and how long they take? Without going into detail there is something that I fear will stop me passing the background check and I was hoping that I would find out either way before my start date. I really don't want to sign off one day and have to sign on again a few days later. Not to mention the fact I feel like I am in limbo having no idea if I actually have a job or not.
Anyway any experiences you could share about these checks and how long they took would be great.

Could you email HR with an unrelated question that would atleast engage with them, state that your are starting on X date. Maybe a question about pension or something else.

no but i have used the same company they use, to be honest it depends on what it is you dont want found.

if you quit a job in a blaze of glory
    if you were sacked
    if you were arrested
did you streak across a baseball field singing Molly Malone (actually happened to someone I know and didn't get a job because of it.)
or if you just said feck it and left a role it all depends on what they can report on.

references can only give date you started, date you finished and would you hire them again? answers

the background check can turn up some odd stuff too so its best to be honest.

some companies care about them others dont, all depends on what you want to keep hidden

Thanks for the replies. Senna I think I will get onto HR at the end of next week if I haven't heard anything back.

Livedadream I have been completely honest with them. I'm just not sure if the thing that I have been honest about will be a big enough black mark for them not to hire me. Tbh I would just really appreciate some kind of communication from them at this point so I know where I stand. I really don't want to start and then be let go because of the background check.

I have never had a background check beyond references, so this is all new to me. There's 3 weeks between me submitting to the background check company and my start date, logic tells me this should be enough time but it's been nearly 2 and nothing yet. I presume they will email me to tell me either way if I have passed?

It can take up to six weeks for some organisations to do a background check in my experience.

The company doing it will get back to you if they can't get everything they need.

Otherwise it's a case of waiting for Oracle to contact you.

A friend of a friend lied and said be had a degree.. they found out and he made up some bs excuse why be didn't finish it and they kept him on, would imagine you'll be fine

Just to add that role was one of the hundreds of sales roles, if it's not sales related I would imagine there will be an issue

He was in the role a month or so before his check was completed..

you should be fine then, it honestly depends i dont want to go saying yeah youll be fine without knowing the detail of what it was but in general the people doing the check dont make the decision the results are passed onto HR and they review them.

I've had background checks and Garda vetting come back with stuff on it and after considering if it would effect the business or the role they do make a decision

eg 1: you work in a bank, do background check, the person was picked up for petty theft, obviously not getting the job.

eg 2: You work in a bank, do a background check, the person was picked up for being a member of green peace and climbing a fence at an oil refinery. properly still give them the job.

it all depends, swings and roundabout sorta.

If you told them, you should be fine.

like a previous poster said it was cant WEEK for these things to come back, email them or call them and just ask is everything okay you are due to start on blaa date but havnt heards anything.

If shows your eager. no harm in that!
