This has been a right time-sink for me just looking up random stuff from crime-related articles to bizarre adverts of remedies for all kinds of ailments. :pac:

Probably not interesting to a lot but I find it fascinating to read up on benign articles or companies advertising and seeing if they're still around today. Random searches can bring up all sorts of weird results out of the enormous archives.

This site does a good job separating things up by state and you can search for any terms, it pulls it's results from ChroniclingAmerica.loc.gov which you could use that instead and see thumbnails of newspaper pages before opening them.

It's interesting seeing how different things were in different states in regards to things like immigrants and the black community, who were reported in a lot of papers like they were subhuman (well, there was the whole slave thing alright...).

Came across this article from Indiana in 1845 reporting on a criminal case of a murder of a "negro" man witnessed by a large crowd egging the murderer on.

Just randomly comb through pages using whatever terms and come across stuff like this:

That little icon of a man in top right corner appeared on whatever articles reporting on escaped "slaves"

Nothing like selling a remedy for weak lungs + spitting blood like a comparison of a woman beating her nephew and his donkey :P

And such freak shows were famous for exaggeration, she's likely half that weight.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
