I have started training for Gael force this year and want to incorporate and good weight training program in between running and cycling ...I am considering stronglifts 5X5 I have found this good before ...my only worry is that squatting might have and effect on my running has anyone done this program while running ...or can anyone recommend a good all over weights routine to compliment my Gael force training

is strong lifts for building mass. A good leg session in the gym and you can forget about running for at least a few days. i find doing light squats can help build good leg strength and core strength but that about the extent of it. Bike session and cross trainer to be of great benefit when you push up the intensity a little.

Even if you break the Gaelforce course record, you're going to be racing for three and a half hours. If you finish middle of the pack, you'll be out there for over six hours. Weights sessions between now and then will do almost nothing for your time - in fact, if you put on enough muscle to gain weight, you may actually post a slower time than you otherwise would have.

I failed to summit CP the first time I did Gaelforce in 2013, and went back last year to prove to myself I could do it. Take it from someone who took over six hours and really should have done a better job of preparing - you can absolutely stand to do more cardio. If you're doing 20 hours a week of running and cycling already and you want to add a session, then add in some mountain running once a week. Not hill running; mountain running. If you still have spare time, bring your road bike up to the mountains too and get some time in on crappy surfaces. If you have time even after all that, go kayaking. All of these would be a better use of your time than weights sessions.

    Hi

Yes I think you are both right ...I have started hill running and will take the bike out starting next week ...I have kettle bells at home so I will do a little strength training with them lighter squats and lunges with getups for upper body ...just with all this running it is nice to have a little upper body strength ..the hills really take it out of you though !!!

Gonna have to disagree with this point

Weight training is a very effective part of training that should be incorporated in all endurance athletes programs.

The Strong Lifts are not the worst but 3 times a week might be a bit excessive if you are adding alot of new stimulus with the biking, kayaking and running

There is a decent thread here on the subject

Thanks I will look through that forum and see what o can get out of it ...I shall probably stick to kettle bells at home ..lunges squats and some upper body ...I am one of these skinny fat people that I always have a belly if I don't do some form of weights ...
