Softening a waxed jacket?

So I've just got a new Timberland field jacket delivered today and while it does look pretty cool and fits me well, it's made from a waxed cotton/linen blend and is incredibly stiff to wear. The jacket literally stands up by itself due to the stiffness. It feels like cardboard to wear and is not really comfortable at all.

Does anyone have any idea how to soften the jacket up or should I just cut my losses and return it? Things like washing are not a possibility as I won't be able to return it if I do.

It'll soften out from wear. Definitely don't wash it, that would remove the wax/oil, so it wouldn't be waterproof or particularly warm to wear anymore. If you really can't wear it, you could try leaving it in a warm place or heating it with a hairdryer (low setting), then kind of massaging it - this would soften it out a bit. You'd probably need to do it a few times.

Thanks Dee. I think I'm just going to return it.

You're probably right - no guarantee that you can get it how you want it!
