Unresponsive iMac

I have an issue with my late-2012 iMac (about 18 months old) where it becomes unresponsive at times and I get the dreaded spinning circle. When I right click on the programs at the bottom of the screen, most (if not all) say “application not responding”. Even selecting the Apple menu to apply the ‘Force Quit’ on the programs results in the spinning circle so I can’t even get them to quit. I end up having to hold the on/off button to reboot the machine and even then when it restarts it continues to be unresponsive.

After a while it corrects itself and goes back to working normal but this can take a half hour or an hour and I don’t know what has happened in the meantime for it to correct itself. I’ve ran OnyX and the AVG virus checker so I’m really stumped as to what’s happening. It’s only been happening the past week or so and as I said earlier, I can work away on it for a few hours with no issues until all of sudden it strikes. And then after a few reboots and being left alone, it goes back to normal.

The only thing that’s different over the past couple of weeks is that I’ve installed the Tweetbot and Fitbit apps Fitbit. Could these apps be infected or be the cause of the problem or is it a memory issue (it has 2 x 4GB)? There is plenty of free space as well (60% or so)

Have you checked the Activity Monitor to see what task is gone wild ? Also, have you installed Transmission recently ?

That model has a recall for potentially faulty hard disks. It may be related to that.

Thanks guys. Looks like it could be the hard drive then.

As I said, it only happens every couple of days and the last time I had the Activity Monitor open and it was only using less 10% of the CPU if that means anything.

That was only for 3TB drives, wasn't it? Can't find anything on their recall site for other sizes.

You could be right. Mine is due to go back, must pull the finger out.
