Fluorescent tube light problems - help!

Any electricians or other lighting expert types out there - I have a standard 1 bulb flourescent tube light in my kitchen. It's flashing on and off in about 2-5 second intervals so not just flickering, it's more like switching it fully off and back on again repeatedly. Change the bulb or starter you say? Both brand new, no change to the bulb/starter that were there before. The unit is around 35 years old. The only other thing that can go wrong with them as far as I know is the ballast but if that goes doesn't the thing just stop working completely?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

No, I've been over it with a fine tooth comb...nothing loose. Would make my life a lot easier if that was it.

You might do better posting in the electrical section.
