What are contractors charging for baling silage? Is the contractor or farmer supplying the plastic? What are fellas paying for the full package, mowing baling and wrapping and drawn and stacked into the yard?

That ends up being pricey feed when the cost of the grass isn't taken into account

I read the thread title as "the cost of making AD silage" , I was wondering what the hell was going on.
Costs €9 or €9.50 here for it baled by a fusion and the contractor brings his own wrap. We mow and draw them in ourselves

€10/bale chopped. Combi system. For clover and lucerne etc 32 wraps, grass gets 24 wraps.

Off topic...it's now illegal to use forage etc to feed digesters here...

is the norm that the price includes rake and baler

at 7-8 for the above it's not a bad price i feel as getting the stroke width is key as well

It's probably easier to use green and brown waste over there though or am I wrong?

With the price of maize etc., Bass, I sincerely doubt it.

€11 per bale here. Mowed, chopped and double wrapped. I wilt it and row it back in with haybob.

While it's not illegal to do it in most countries, it is being made un-viable. Most client we have been dealing with recently have a minimum of 75% of the feedstock for the digester as on farm waste (or neighbours waste). This waste being FYM, slurry, chicken/duck ****e, waste silage etc. Up to 25% of the feedstock would be grown for the digester as a stable consistent Base to add to.

Yes I agree, only make when necessary. Mostly pit silage. Heard of several farmers going all bales. Don't know how they justify that. I think some people do some of the work themselves and think they are saving. Not putting in full cost of own work

For me to bale and wrap it's €5.80. They supply the plastic and €15 an acre to mow and €10 to rake

€15 to mow would be cheap I'd say

Does that not show it probably makes sense to buy in (good quality) silage locally at €18-€22 per bale early most winters if cost of production is running higher and only bale paddocks that are gone too strong. Leave whatever you have baled yourself for after Christmas so if there is a shortage you won't be caught with higher price.

    Mowing: €2.50 per bale
    Baling: €5 per bale
    Wrapping: €2.25 per bale

If the contractor bring the plastic we pay the cost, he doesn't charge extra for it. He'll usually knock a small bit off the bill, so it evens out a bit less than the prices above.

€17.50 to get a bale to the stack, this includes fert, rolling, plastic, mow, turn out, row in, bale, wrap and land opportunity cost. All is done by our own machinery bar the baling. Bale storage area is not included.

I would say that is a cheap as anyone can make them !!!

    cost of labour?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 607 ✭✭✭larthehar

I don’t have the excel sheet with me, but ya labour is included. The method I use is to take the machine cost, assume it is worth zero after 7 years include maintenance and divide across useage. Mower cost 7k last year, over 7years that is 1k per year. Maintenance is average 200 per yr, @ 720 bales per year that is 1.60/bale for mower only. Tractor costs me 30quid an hr including labour based on 40k over 7 years @1000hrs/yr and 12l/hr at 70c/l plus 10quid an hr for me.
    So 5acres/hr mowing @ 10bales/ac is 60c a bale. That is 2.20 a bale for mowing.
All machinery is costed this way and the mowing is the most expensive I fo myself!

There is little difference in cost between bales and pit unless you are at the higher end of the scale size wise and then only on 1st cut. You have to remember that bales are very easy to feed. a smallish 2WD tractor (60-70 HP) is more than adequate to feed base silage even in large quanties. Add in no concrete base needed. As well all farmers that use bales will tell you that bales are superior quality to pit silage due to higher chop length and less spoilage.

In theory yes but in general it is very hard to buy good quality bales. No farmers will sell his better bales and especially not in September. In general most lads selling bales are selling silage baled in late June at 14+ bales/acre. Harde to compare this to silage baled in late May or Early June.

I cost silage at about 23/bale. 7.5/bale to rake, bale and wrap. 2/bale to cut ( I cut some of my own. 2.8/bale for plastic and 1 euro to stack. 4.9/bale for NPK. This is made up of 1.9/bale for 50 units/acre for N in the form of Urea and 3/bale for slurry at 4K/acre. That comes to about 18/bale. I add a 5/bale for general grass costs.
