transplanting beech hedge

I am looking for any and all advice on an idea I have to transplant a length of beech hedging. It was set as bare root 3 years ago so is about 3foot in height now, but one section of it isn't giving enough break from the wind.
So we'll probably put in an evergreen instead, but I was wondering could I dig out the existing beech hedges and use elsewhere?
If so, what's the best time of year? Should I dig around each plant and take soil and roots up in one go, then drop into the new hole elsewhere?
