    Hi,
I'm 17 and currently living in Donegal and I've been told a few times it's cheaper to do my ppl in America for say. I am hoping to be a commercial pilot when I'm older and I want to get my PPL done to increase my chances in cadetships programmes.

So any recommendations what I should do?

    Thanks,
    Seamus

I'm doing mine in Birr.....175p/h in a 172 and that is the cheapest I've found.

If I had the bulk cash and time I'd be stateside......cheaper, better weather etc.

You can go CPL , ME/IR, MCC & ATPL for approx 30k here and your practicality airline ready bar the jet type rating.

So as the title suggests is there anywhere in Ireland that will finance pilot training to ATPL level

Try the banks and credit union. For that amount you may need someone as a guarantor or the deeds of a property as collateral against the loan. Might be worth ringing the two Irish flight schools and asking if they have any industry contacts who specialise in financing training.

Failing that, work and save and you may be able to train (modular route) as you work.

That may not be quite accurate, minimum cost in Ireland for CPL/MEIR & MCC/JOC would be a minimum of €35,000. That's outside of the the price of doing the ATPL exams and exam fees, so factor in another possible €5,500 for those. And don't forget the hour building before the CPL, 100hrs PIC required.

In order to avoid blocking the "Ask a pilot..." thread with queries re schools, modular route, finance, medicals, etc I opened this thread to combine all the recent questions/posts.

I'm not sure if having a PPL really increases your chances to get in a cadet scheme, I would rather focus on excellent grades as they want to see that you can study well

As for flying in the states, remember that you need an EASA approved school - those now cost at around 9k-10k usd and with the exchange rate being where it's at you might as well stay in Ireland

Both flight schools over there increased their prices. I had flights book and ready to go! When I was contacted by Birr i decided that the travel, accommodation + the raise in fees was not with the trip over.

Very true but considering you bare at the mercy of the Irish weather the states is a better option if you plan your go commercial as you can fly and fly till your hearts content. I've often sat on the ground ready to fly only to be grounded by the weather.

I'm all for keeping the cash in the country but if the OP what's to hit ATPL unfortunately his best chance is to fly as much as possible and in this country that's not always possible due to weather.
