Hi. Have a bit of what seems to be a missfire on my mk1 avensis 1.6 4afe. It only happens when the car is well heatened up, which would be quite a while after the guage needle gets up to normal operating temp. When you let your foot off the gas and then hit the gas again it has a flat spot before kicking in. It seemed to start a few weeks back after the joint where the water pipe enters the engine was replaced due to a small leak and the coolant was replaced too. The other job done at that time was a small hole in the exaust was welded. The plugs were replaced this week to see if that was the problem, but the problem remains. Anyone experience this problem or know likely cause? Thanks.

    Try plug leads?

    Try plug leads?

Sometimes, if the plug leads are the problem, you'll find a black line down the white porcelain part of the plugs. You'll have to remove them to be able to see this on the 4AFE engine.

But +1 for the suggestion. It's where I'd be starting having come across this problem with the same engine in the past.

I reckon it's one of the injectors myself. The electrical part of the injector loses resistance under heat. Does it sound like it's running on 3 cylinders?
