I've heard that John Paul II initially wanted to take the name of Pope Stanislaus but this was vetoed by high ranking Cardinals in the Curia. This all happened in between his election and presentation to the public as the new Pope John Paul II.

I don't understand why? Surely the newly elected holy father has the right to name himself.

My understanding, based on AFAIR a bio of the late Pope, was that he choose John Paul in honour of his predecessor. It would be unlikely in the modern Papacy for a newly elected Pope to be directed to change and there is no such (official) veto mechanism within the curia.
