i have a trunk of a tree here that i want to cut up for firewood. my problem is that the trunk is about 3 times the diameter of the chainsaw so i cant cut out the middle on it.

Any ideas of other ways how to cut it up or crack it in half or something. Or is the only job to try and find somebody with a very large chainsaw. (i think my own one is 18 inch).

What sort of timber is it and what size and price would be looking for it?

Cut the rings as much as you can with your bar length and then stand up on it and split away the section of the ring you've cut. Keep making her smaller by sawing and splitting.

sycamore. id day around 4 ft not exactly sure just a guess but too big for the chainsaw. I wouldn't sell it at all only cut it away up for firewood

So about 5 feet in diameter. If it was me, I'd leave it to the professionals. If you look at some of the videos on youtube, you'll see how they do it. A lot of expertise involved. They have a new way of doing felling now where they cut away the central 1/3 or so of the tree so that it wont split or barberchair as they call it.
I've a cut a few big ones with a big saw and you'd be relieved to have them on the ground. Not for the fainthearted. They don't always fall the way you plan it.

It is cut down on the ground but its just too big for me to cut up on the ground. will try and cut all around the diameter in rings and give it a few bangs of the back actor with a bucket with teeth on it and hopefully it should break up then.

If it's on down already just buy a longer bar and chain for the saw. Check though first with saw agent that saw is powerful enough to drive it.

You'd want a 28-30 inch bar at least for a tree that size, unless the op has a professional 80cc saw lying around not a hope it would work....
Paid 150 euro before Xmas for a 24 inch bar and chain, their not exactly cheap either

You mentioned a back actor. Can you get hold of a rock breaker. They are very handy for splitting the rings of a knocked tree. You can reuce the diameter after each cut.Might be an option.Either way you will heat yourself twice with firewood.

get a felling wedge or any type of wedge, if you dont have one just cut one out with the saw. it just needs to be a wedge shape.

place it in the hole made by your saw at the top of the log and sledge away until the piece breaks off in as far as you have cut.

or the other option is to cut across the grain at the end of the log if you can and in as far as deep as you can.

there's no need for fancy equipment or long bars, you need a big wedge and a sledge hammer.

    easy peasy
