Road tyres on mountain bike

Firstly cycling isnt really my thing, i use it as a bit of cross training. So sorry of the below is stupid

I generally do 20k spins a few times a week on horrible roads due to where i live. I've been doing this on my lappier i bought for 300 euro 6 years ago second hand. It has served me well with no love from me.

I also have a giant talon 1 that i have used 4 times due to a hip injury. Its mint and a waste sitting in the shed.

My question is can i put "road" type tyres on the giant so i can use it for my spins. It has mountain bike tyres on it now.

What type of tyre should i be going for ?

    Thanks all

Yes you can depending on your wheel size (26 or 29 inch) and width.
You may need to change wheels if they are too wide.

Why not cycle with the current tyres? It will make you fitter.

I'm assuming you have disc brakes. If not brakes may have to be reconfigured or changed depending on rim size.

    Yup disc brakes

I usually cycle 20k a day on a cross country mountain bike with 29 inch, 2.1 inch wide tyres. It's not the fastest way to travel as I can only hit 40k down hill but it certainly has improved my fitness.

I'm used to racing bikes flying past up hill, but it was a little disconcerting to see a woman in her 60s passing me by on what looked to be a normal bike.
It was only afterwards I realised it was an electric bike and she was flying up a hill.

Something like this should suit you.
I have them on a MTB, they spin along very nicely and still have enough width for bad roads.
There should be no issue with your brake or wheels, straight swop over of tyres.
You may be able to get the tyres, that I have linked, cheaper elsewhere.

    Schaffer1969,
Ha! Hadn't been on a bike since the 80's, and was talked into a 15k charity ride. Borrowed a Specialized Sirrus.
About 10k in, gasping for air, suddenly realised I was overhauling another cyclist.
As I swung past I couldn't help giving her a sideways glance of superiority; only to discover she was about 12 and her bike had a pink basket and a bell in the shape of a daisy....... :D

I've been using slick mtb tyres for a few years, continental city or schwalbe kojak. Depending on what tyre width you get you might need to get a narrower tube for them.

Get some tyres with no tread for the road, like the schwalbe kojak

Get a floor pump from Lidl next week, and pump the tyres up hard, you'll fly along.

I've rolled down Howth past lads on road bikes on my mountain bike with slicks

    O.P.
If the roads, you are going to be cycling on are as bad as you describe, I would stick with something like I suggested in previous post.
the ones, I linked to, have good puncture resistance and because of their volume, are reasonably comfortable on bad roads.

    Continental Travel Contact , 26 x 1.75"

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ie/en/s?q=continental+travel+contact+trekking+tyre&cat=product

Have used these for years on my MTB both on and off road. They have proved bomb-proof for me even on stony forestry trails. The wide smooth center tread gives very low rolling resistance if pumped to high psi. I have done 70k spins on the road with these at 26kmh average.

Will be putting a set on my son's MTB for mini Triathlons this year, cheaper than a road bike!

You'll notice a huge difference, if you switch to slicks or semi-slicks.
Back in the day, about 1991/92, I did the Maracycle(Dublin-Belfast-Belfast-Dublin) on a mountain bike. I put slicks on the bike, pumped the bejebus out of them and motored on. I was able to stay with one of the fastest groups on the road.
