    Hi people

Need a car. Not Irish so don't know what brands here have a good or bad rep and would really like some advice. I am looking for a simple, no luxury no frills type of car (prefer the money going to the basics)with a not so big engine (1.4 is ideal or 1.6 maximum). I see a lot of C3's and Renaults around here as well as some Opels. I like those and previously had a Hyundai Getz before coming to Ireland which I really liked. They don't seem to be so popular here so not sure if I should get one or not.

    Any ideas?

8k would get you a decent Hyundia i30 or Kia Ceed. They are sister companies so styling aside they are mechanically identical.

    Thanks, I like the i30 but aren't they 1.2?

    1.4/1.6 petrol and 1.6 diesel.

If you're looking for that kind of car, then you can get a Kia C'eed around 2010/11. They had a 7 year warranty so you'll have a bit of peace of mind with them. Something like this:

Apart from that a Toyota Auris is a very safe bet, reliable and cheap enough to run.

I like that KIA a lot and it seems like a good deal compared what a 2011 Hyundai i30 would cost. I guess different countries have better deals on different brands.

Is diesel better here in Ireland? seems like a lot of cars are diesel over here

Diesel is more popular here since around 2008 onwards when the motor tax system changed from engine capacity to emissions. Diesels generally became cheaper to buy brand new and offered cheaper motor tax.

Your choice in post 2007 diesel models will be greater than petrol but choosing a diesel over a petrol model should depending on whether your driving style suits a diesel over a petrol as diesels are generally more complex and there is more to go wrong, especially if not driven as intended.
