Sedation for extraction

I have a back tooth that has decayed and has an infection in it. My dentist x-rayed it and re-filled it and gave me antibiotics which didn't help. It flared up and I got a stronger course of antibiotics. The alternatives were root canal or extraction. I went with extraction and returned to the dentist to have it removed.

He gave me two injections, one into the roof of my mouth which nearly sent me over the edge with the pain. I had a swelling just over my tooth and that's where he injected. I was shaking with the shock and the pain and had to sit in the waiting room for 15 mins to calm down :o. Going to the dentist normally is not a problem for me and I don't mind getting fillings or injections at all but this was just horrific.

I said I couldn't go through with it as I could still feel the tooth pain after the two injections. I got another course of antibiotics and said I would return when the pain had lessened. The pain has now gone but I still have a small swelling like a gum boil over the bad tooth. I'm afraid to go back in case the same thing happens again and I make a show of myself!

Has anyone had a tooth extracted under sedation? I would normally try to avoid anything like this as I prefer to be in control at all time. How does it work? Are you completely sedated or just a little? Any advice gratefully received!

    Thanks everyone

First I've seen of this thread!!
Certainly IV sedation should get you through this extraction without a problem (provided you are reasonably fit and well...)

Hope you got sorted but if you didn't this is how I found it "I have absolutely no idea " and that is after having two wisdom teeth and gum surgery three times and an implant done all under sedation. They give you the white hapoy juice and that is the last thing you remember. I even walked in and stood still for an orbital xray with no memory of it. You'll be fine but two things you will need a day off work and a lift home. Then under no circumstances use a straw to drink for a few days you'll suck the blood clot in the old tooth socket out and expose the nerve man that hurt

I've done this as well and can second what spaceHopper said, especially with respect to getting a lift home. Also don't plan to do anything but sleep it off the first day. Best have someone stay with you until you wake up to make sure you're OK.

ive had this done. its great.
i was terrified of the dentist at the start of treatment so opted for this on the first 3 visits. he started bringing me out of sedation a litlle earlier each time so i could adapt while still being kinda fuzzy i guess.
