I was checking my device but for some reason in android 5 there is no option to encrypt the SD card? I checked security but the option is missing

I think encryption on sd is enabled by default from 5.0 upwards....

I would assume the SD would have to be in from first boot of the phone though

    Go into phone settings menu

    More tab

    Security

Should then have the option to encrypt device and encrypt sd card

If you want to encrypt it you must adopt it as phone storage, not use it as an external.
