Frozen at login problem

    Hey folks.

    I've a 2015 MBP retina running Yosemite 10.10.1

Everything was fine up until 4 days ago....never had a single issue with the machine since I got it over a year ago.

However, I lifted the lid and the login scree came up as usual. But I couldn't click into any account. The cursor was available, but nothing could be clicked.

I'm a Mac noob, so I had to look up what could be done.

I found that by holding CMD+R after the start up sound allowed me access to a screen where "disk utility" was available. This "unfroze" the problem and everything was fine.

2 days ago, the same problem occured, only this time it was while I was working on the laptop....no spinning beach ball...just wasn't able to click anything.

Again the cursor was available, but that's it.

Repeated the CMD+R trick and it took a while in order for the options to click into disk utility came up..but it worked and I was back in business.

However, today it happened again and it's been over 2 hours and the CMD+R trick hasn't worked.

I can't click "disk utility" to repair the disk and I'm at a complete loss as to how to fix this problem once and for all.

    Any recommendations?

I don't know what happened all of a sudden 4 days ago. It's extremely frustrating and because I work online, I'm dependent on having my laptop work.

Hoping someone can shed some light on this for me?

    TIA

Sounds like a hard disk problem. Did you opt for the SSD or the standard spinning disk ? What did you do in Disk Utility to get it working again ?

The newer MBPs have Solid State Disks (SSDs) and while they're very reliable relative to spinning disks they can go faulty.

You could try a restore ?

I have the SSD, so it's surprising to hear that it may be hard disk related. But as you said these things happen.

So about an hour after my OP, it kicked out of the freeze on the CMD+R page and restarted with zero issues.

But it's obviously something more serious?

I've time machine set up, and the hotel I'm staying in for the next few days have great wifi...so should I do a reinstall?

Have no clue about any of this as I'm a mac user only a year and I've had zero issues with anything until now.

Thanks for taking the time to help out :)

I'd suggest letting the builtin disk utilities run first - http://osxdaily.com/2012/05/24/check-hard-drive-health-mac-disk-utility/

See where that gets you ....

I've done that and it came back all ok. Nothing showing up there.

Just worried that it will freeze up again or something

    Thanks for the imput mate.

Update the OS to El Capitan. 10.11.3 is available.

Once done reset the SMC and PRAM.

Hopefully that will stop the freezing out.

Is it possible to download the update on an external drive and then update from that at a later stage?

The reason is because the wifi is great where I am, but it won't be at my next stop if I need to go down that route.

El Capitan is meant to be terribly unstable? Or is that the earlier beta versions?

Don't think it is possible to download to an external drive and run it. But I am sure the oracle of knowledge google would know for sure.

    I am running El Capitan on 2 MAC's a 2012 iMac and a 2014 15" Retina with no issues.

If it's like Yosemite you can get it at the App Store and when it starts the install just cancel it. You should then have the El Capitain installer App in your applications folder. Copy this to to your external drive if you want. Alternatively you can create a USB bootable disk which you can use to install later.

I can't remember right now but there's a small app you can find online that simplifies the USB creation process.
