Beef data & genomics Matching Stock bulls with cows

    Hi all

I have a new stock bull - first timer - who is going out to pasture this year. He is Charolais and has a high rating for terminal. Now.. I want to match him to around 10 cows and I'm trying to choose which ones so that it won't affect his ratings for progeny...

We have another older Limo bull who is 3 star replacement and terminal and for purposes of breeding heifers for the scheme I have him with high replacement index cows. He's older too so he will be getting the bulk of the herd.

I'm just looking for advice really on breeding my younger bull. Will it affect his ratings if I put him to average rated terminal cows?

I'm using AI for my pure bred heifers in the hope I'll breed better pedigree bulls/heifers for future.

No, it doesn't matter what cows you mate a bull to. It shouldn't effect his ratings. That's the theory anyway.

    It will Patsy; I think.

Was a 5 star maternal and paternal bull few years ago, check the old PG catalogues now a 1 star.

If bull mated with good terminal cows that kill out R or U decent grades etc will boost or keep his terminal stars and over all star rating. If mated with poor cows killing out as Os etc will drop in star rating.

APZ is lovely bull fact 1 star says all you need to know about star ratings.

What exactly are you trying to do? Produce high star terminal or maternal cattle?

Yes, I know what you are saying in that the more U grade cattle a bull produces, the higher his star ratings will go, but that has to take into account the quality of cow he is crossed on. All these cows will have produced calves in the past, so the quality of these calves from other bulls will be taken into account too. So too will the calves from other bulls on other farms related to your bull. If they all have the same sire, for example.

Just breed as you want to and forget about effecting the ratings of your bull.

Barnaman I agree with you to a point but APZ's daughters are having difficulty calving (they are calving young) 15.2% at 83% reliability and that's what is killing him (plus daughter CI), on Docility, carcass weight, conformation, daughter milk he is 4 star across breeds.... (he gets hit on feed intake too!).

MollyRo I wouldn't worry about that he's a terminal CH you won't be keeping any of his progeny, the few calves he sires are unlikely to effect his index a whole lot, if he had an AI Sire and he dropped that would effect him a lot but once he is ok on calving I wouldn't worry about it.

Your older LM bull is an issue 3 stars across breeds is not really good enough for the scheme needs to be four or five, what is his index? Using him on 4 star cows means you may end up with 3 star heifers and they won't be above the €74 threshold. And you know yourself your highest cows will all have bulls and the lower ones all heifers!
