When I try to look up a definitive list of the most reliable cars it keeps pointing me towards this strange list from Warranty direct - http://www.reliabilityindex.com/top-100

Is it accurate? I mean if I look in the top 5, the Kalos, the Lancer and the MX-5 - those percentages, looks like a very small sample size has led them to the top

Try jd power? That link you have is from a warranty supplier and we all know insurance companies have a different understanding of statistics than people with a bit of common sense.

Check http://www.truedelta.com/ as well. It is US based - but you'll get some European models as well.

Thanks, I also just found http://www.anusedcar.com/ - German stats (in English) with each brand based on 500 cars minimum and done via ADAC when a car visits the garage

Dekra and Tuv stats are not very good IMHO - they are based on the percentages of the cars failing a German version of NCT. It is more a test of how well the service network works for particular brand - and not surprising - you'll get the best service for the German cars.

Much better is ADAC (AA in here) stats that states how many particular car required help by mobile ADAC team. They cross check that with the number of registered vehicles of particular type.

Nissan Micra should be in a reliability category of it's own! Nothing breaks those things.

www.autoexpress.co.uk and www.carbuyer.co.uk also have reliability indexes

Those are exactly same stats, coming from users' feedback.

Yes, www.carsurvey.org use people's feedback too.
With all that entails, e.g. unhappy users are more likely to sign up to a site to complain etc..

    Unless it's a Nissan Micra K12.

What year of car are you thinking of buying and what is your other requirements. That will have a big bearing on determining what king of car you should look for.

Ah yes thanks, do you have a link? I think I've found the site, but not sure where to go for the reliability figures

    ADAC (in German): https://www.adac.de/infotestrat/unfall-schaeden-und-panne/pannenstatistik/

    TÜV reports: http://www.anusedcar.com/

    DEKRA: www.used-car-report.com

Exactly. Manufacturer's change their models on average every six years. Reliability of a particular model release is the best guide, not the make, or worse, going by original nationality of the brand name, never mind the current holding company.
