Breaking a JSA claim to do voluntary work abroad?

Is it possible to close a claim, go abroad for a few (up to six) months to do voluntary work with VSO or another NGO or charity, or even WWOOF, HelpX or Workaway, and then come back and enter a claim again? Do the Social Welfare officials frown on this sort of thing and see it as frivolous in terms of trying to get a job and eventually have a career in Ireland, or would it be okay? Does the length of the time away matter? Does coming back from a period abroad without a P45 make any difference to the Social Welfare officials?

Just having no luck jobhunting in Ireland, so I thought I might go do some volunteering for a while. Some volunteer situations supply room and board so it might be feasible, but I don't want to end up back in Ireland in the future and sanctioned for some obscure reason. Would appreciate advice. Thank you.
